The Problem is the Definition of Cultural Fit

If hiring teams see cultural fit only in terms of certain personality traits, i.e. “They remind myself of me,” they will restrict the creativeness of their organization. Cultural fit is not a static objective. It will change as the organization changes. Cultural fit measures how an individual is aligned to the culture of an organization. Lacking a consensus of the meaning of cultural fit will lead to discrimination, poor hiring decisions, and increased turnover.

According to an article in the Harvard Business Review, by Ron Friedman, he contends that if all employees are identical to each other, then the organization will suffer (2015). To a certain extent, this makes sense; however, that is not the intent of cultural fit. The definition used by Friedman does create an atmosphere of exclusion because it combines non-cultural variables. It is the type of analysis used when describing and hiring the typical IBM salesperson of the 1960’s and 1970’s, not the professional of the twenty-first century. Cultural fit does not mean creating clones of one another but it does mean people are working together with a common goal.

Working Definition

A working definition begins by addressing several key corporate traits, KCI’s (Key Control Indicators). These traits are similar throughout organizations and organizational positions. The variable is to what degree does the organization’s accepted values and behaviors respond to them? Each organization is different, each hiring team is different , but the KCI’s are constant.

High Definition Picture

To say that an individual has a make-up consistent with that of the organization means that 1) there is a clear picture of what the organization’s or hiring teams composition is, and 2) there is a clear analytical picture of the composition of the candidate. The picture must eliminate any type of discrimination and not be able to be manipulated by the candidate. This analytical approach is a key to developing highly motivated and driven employees.
